Learn English – Words, Phrases, Clauses and Sentences
The units introduced in this article are for beginners of English Speaking Course. Clarifying the ideas by giving cases is the most ideal method to Learn English Language. We will take an example of a Flight Announcement to take in the grammatical units
‘Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. On behalf of Indigo Airlines, Captain Manish and his crew welcome you on board the Indigo Flight to Mumbai. Our flight time will be of fifty-five minutes. We shall be cruising at a speed of 150 miles per hour.’
The Grammatical Units in the announcement are :
eg. welcome, you, board, and, Indigo, flight etc.
There are many words in this announcement which have different meanings and can be arranged in different manners to change the sentence.
- Phrases and clauses
We use phrases to build a clause.
eg. Subject – Our flight time (noun phrase)
Verb – will be
Complement – of fifty-five minutes
A clause has a subject and a verb.
We can’t make a sentence without a clause.
A sentence can be a single clause or a collection of clauses.
eg. On behalf of Indigo Airlines, Captain Manish and his crew welcome you on board the Indigo Flight to Mumbai.
